Police Escort Kills Man in NATACO
By Segun Thomas
STRAY bullet from one of the riffles of police Escort team has killed an Okada man, one Danlami in NATACO Area of Lokoja, Kogi State capital.
The pandemonium that ensued, forced the residents and motorists on the ever-busy Abuja Road to flee for their dear lives.
Reports reaching The Graphic said that a mobile policeman fired a shot to scare people at a traffic hold-up, caused by an accident on the road.
The identity of the police escort was not immediately known, but reliable sources confirmed that the team was traveling towards Abuja.
Resident of the area took law into their hands as they wanted to unleash attack on any police seen in the state capital as a form of retaliation.
Eventhough the state police command described the incident as very unfortunate, it however assured that the police is investigating the incident.
Speaking to our Crime Desk correspondent, the state Acting Commissioner of Police, Alhaji Abdullahi Magaji said there was an accident involving a trailer and two other vehicles which resulted in the blocking of the road along the NATACO stretch of Abuja-Lokoja Road.
He said that before the police got to the scene of the accident, there was a melee that erupted between the drivers of the vehicles involved in the accident and other motorists who were eager to pass.
The Acting Commissioner, who noted that police force is one, admitted that the policeman that shot the Okada man was not from his command, stressing that the headquarters have been contacted to trace the alleged offender.
He expressed confidence that the culprit would be brought to book, appealing to the community to be patient with the police.
He consoled the family of the deceased on behalf of the inspector-general of police, Mr.Onovo.
