…Former DIG
Calls for total Disarmament in
Ebiraland
By James Oyewole
AS the search for lasting peace
in Ebiraland continues, a former
Deputy Inspector-General of
Police, Alhaji Abdulrahim Mamman
Yusuf has called on the Local
Government Council chairmen and
other stakeholders to intensify
effort towards total
disarmament.
Alhaji Yusuf who made the call
in an exclusive interview said
it was the only panacea to the
lingering crisis in the area.
He said he was fully in support
of any holistic effort that
would usher in the desired
lasting peace to Ebiraland.
While commending the concerted
efforts of the state governor on
the crisis, he however pointed
out that the on-going
disarmament would only succeed
if the political class in the
area embraces the exercise with
sincerity of purpose.
His words: “These restive youths
cannot afford three square meals
on their own not to talk of
buying these dangerous weapons.
It is easy to see that they are
armed by the political class to
achieve their inordinate
ambition.”
Declaring further he said, “So
let them advise their thugs to
hand over their guns since they
know them. These politicians
should inform the police if
their thugs refuse to drop their
guns.”
“I want to beg the politicians
to show exemplary leadership at
a time like this. They should
stop politics of destruction and
start to think of what they can
give back to the society and not
politics of bitterness and
destruction,” he added.
He advised the security agencies
to bring to book all those that
were found to be involved in the
recent crisis, to serve as
deterrent to others.
