Self-Accounting Bill Underway
A bill for a law to provide
for an autonomous accounting
status of the Kogi State
House of Assembly and other
matters connected therewith
has passed through its third
reading for on-ward
submission to the state
governor for assent.
According to the Majority
Leader of the House, Barr.
Adamu Mohammed, the bill, if
passed into law, would
reverse the undue
overdependence of the
Legislature on the Executive
arm for fund to carry out
its legislative and
oversight functions.
He disclosed that, Kogi and
Kwara States had yet to
establish Assembly Service
Commission, adding that in
the state presently, the
House of Assembly is the
only arm under the tripod
system of government that is
without a commission. He
called for the speedy
passage of the bill into law
for the purpose of balanced
justice, equity and fairness
to enable the House manage
its affairs.
The Majority Leader, who
stated that an autonomous
accounting status of the
Assembly and the Assembly
Service Commission bills are
inter-related, called for
the harmonization of the two
bills.
The Majority Leader, who
presented the bill on the
floor of the House, stated
that for the institution to
effectively impart on the
lives of the people it
represents through its
quality legislation and
effect overseeing the
Executive, it must be
adequately funded.
The Minority Leader of the
House said the bill is in
consonance with the
provisions of the
constitution.
